LeBron James was back in his hometown of Akron on Wednesday afternoon, standing atop a basketball court.Unlike many others he’s visited throughout his life, this one was unique: The multicolored surface and brand new hoops are just outside the doors of the I Promise School that he helped open last year. Ushering in the court, sponsored by the 2K foundation, alongside his former high school teammates who once won a national championship in 2003, James hoped that the new court would help build bonds that last longer than typical pick-up games.“You can create a brotherhood, or sisterhood, to be able to create things that last forever,” he said to a small gathering of students, media and other community members at the unveiling. He then gestured to his St. Vincent-St.Mary’s teammates: “We created a friendship over 25 years ago, and we’re still standing strong.” Newsroom GuidelinesNews TipsContact UsReport an Error As the school eventually levels up to accomodate grades three through eight, officials anticipate more change and possibly consideration for adding another building to the complex. For now, a court is a good start. AD Quality Auto 360p 720p 1080p Top articles1/5READ MOREUCLA alum Kenny Clark signs four-year contract extension with PackersIt’s been one year since the I Promise School began, and already the school has ambitions of standing the test of time.In April, the New York Times reported that 90 percent of the school’s 240 students had met or exceeded their individual growth goals math and reading, which was well ahead of the curve in the school district. That feat is considered more remarkable given that the school is designed to take in the most at-risk and struggling students. The Akron Beacon Journal also reported that all but one of the students who attended last year decided to re-enroll this year — retention that is unparalleled in the area. But the school doesn’t plan on resting on its early laurels: The student body is expanding to 344 this academic year as IPS adds fifth graders to its third- and fourth-grade levels. The staff is also growing to keep a 20-to-1 student-to-teacher ratio: Small class sizes are one of the top principles of the publicly operated school. The court is also a small part of a larger rollout of amenities. IPS also has a new digital media lab that includes a broadcast facility. Adding to features for families that already exist, the school has put in a Family Resource Center that now includes legal help and adult education classes for parents of students, as well as laundry facilities to help families who don’t have access to washers and dryers at home (the school found that unlaundered clothes contributed to absenteeism). There’s also a more permanent housing for intervention specialists, who can identify specific issues for students while trying to avoid punishments such as suspensions that cause them to miss more school.
