Q & A: Russ Anderson

December 30, 2020 | By admin | No Comments | Filed in: oysnvzlet.

first_imgRuss Anderson at the southern terminus of the A.T.On his quest to thru-hike the Appalachian Trail, Russ Anderson of Linville, N.C., has endured hypothermic conditions, Army rangers with machine guns, and bears that know how to get food bags out of trees. Not bad for a 71-year-old retiree who’d never spent a night on the A.T. before deciding to hike it from end to end.How much of the A.T. have you hiked so far? I’m 178.5 miles in. I started in Springer, made it to the Nantahala Gorge, then skipped the Smokies and hiked into Damascus. This summer, I hope to start in Damascus and head north, then come back to do the Smokies in the winter. Is it as tough as everyone says? It’s like six or seven hours of extreme manual labor. Even if you’re 25 years old, it’s difficult. Those first days in Georgia were tough. Foggy, drizzling rain, cold, hail, sleet, freezing winds. Once I arrived at a shelter, I stripped off my rain gear and got into my sleeping bag. It took two hours to get warm again. But it’s worth it. The trail itself, the people I’ve met…it’s worth it.What does your wife think about you thru-hiking the A.T.? She doesn’t like it. A person my age is supposed to be the leader of a family. I’m not supposed to disappear for six months. In a sense, I feel like I’m cheating the people in my lives. My wife and I are empty nesters, so she’s alone when I’m out there hiking. Even my friends think I’m crazy. They say I’m going to get eaten by a bear or fall off a cliff. What made you decide to undertake this hike? I’m a retired naval officer. My life has been filled with unusual adventure. I just need more of that. Only 11 people over 70 have ever thru-hiked the A.T. And none of them had tried hiking it for the first time over 70. So that got me interested. What’s been your most memorable moment on the trail so far? My second night out, I was sleeping in a shelter with 10 other people. All of a sudden, I hear a big explosion. Then machine gun fire. Then I hear yelling and shouting. None of us knew what was going on. Everybody was wicked scared, thinking the Russians were coming or something. Turns out, we were in the middle of an Army Ranger training exercise. We sat there for two hours while things blew up all around us. 1 2last_img read more

Yu Darvish put time on DL to use, refining mechanics

August 26, 2020 | By admin | No Comments | Filed in: mmfausynf.

first_imgLOS ANGELES >> Before Yu Darvish joined the Dodgers, pitching coach Rick Honeycutt did his homework, studying video of the right-hander from throughout his career with the Texas Rangers. To Honeycutt’s highly trained eye, what he saw on video and what he saw in person during Darvish’s three starts with the Dodgers – particularly his last two before going on the DL with lower back tightness – was significantly different.Honeycutt noticed Darvish would sometimes tilt his back shoulder down farther during the first half of his delivery than he had early in his career. The result was a higher arm slot when Darvish released the ball. After Darvish’s start against the Chicago White Sox 10 days ago, Honeycutt knew he would have some time to work with Darvish in the bullpen. So he asked the right-hander if he had noticed his arm slot changing since he returned having from the elbow-ligament replacement surgery in March 2015. Kershaw rehabBefore going on a rehab assignment with Triple-A Oklahoma City, left-hander Clayton Kershaw argued that it was unnecessary and he could just start for the Dodgers on Saturday instead. He might have had a point.Kershaw faced 16 hitters in five innings for the OKC Dodgers Saturday and struck out half of them. He allowed two hits – a solo home run by Jorge Soler leading off the second inning and an infield single. He picked that runner off base.Kershaw threw 64 pitches in his five innings, 43 strikes. His next start will be for the Dodgers during next weekend’s series in San Diego. Kershaw has been out since July 23 with a lower back strain.Bellinger returnCody Bellinger said he ran the curve of the infield as close to 100 percent as he could before Saturday’s game and had no instability or discomfort in his right ankle. Bellinger has been on the DL since spraining that ankle a week ago.He is eligible to come off the DL Wednesday in Arizona.“We’re right on track,” Bellinger said.Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said there’s no reason at this point to think Bellinger won’t be activated Wednesday but the training staff “has right of first refusal.”McCarthy statusRight-hander Brandon McCarthy started a rehab assignment with Class-A Rancho Cucamonga by pitching three hitless innings Friday. But Roberts said McCarthy was “a little disappointed” with the results because there were “a couple misfires in there.”McCarthy has been on the DL since July 20, ostensibly for blister problems on his pitching hand. But the right-hander is also dealing with some of the same command and delivery issues that derailed his 2016 season after he returned from Tommy John surgery.Roberts said McCarthy will throw a bullpen session with Honeycutt at some point in the next few days and is tentatively scheduled to throw another rehab game for Rancho Cucamonga on Wednesday.AlsoOutfielder Andre Ethier moved his rehab assignment to Triple-A Oklahoma City Saturday and started in left field behind Kershaw that featured six players with major-league experience.Ethier went 5 for 25 with a double and six RBI in eight games with Rancho Cucamonga and Double-A Tulsa before moving to OKC this weekend. He is expected back with the Dodgers after rosters expand on Sept. 1. “It was actually perfect timing,” Darvish said through his interpreter Saturday. “I was actually thinking the same thing.“After Tommy John surgery my arm slot had moved up. Now that I’m healthy and getting stronger, it’s something I was able to work on (with Honeycutt).”Darvish threw two bullpen sessions during his 10 days on the DL, making that adjustment in his delivery. The idea is to “make all his pitches come out of the same window,” Honeycutt said.Darvish will be activated from the DL and start Sunday against the Milwaukee Brewers, having refined his mechanics and refreshed his body during his time on the DL.“Last year, I only threw 100 innings after coming back from Tommy John surgery,” Darvish said. “So it’s about the time of year when a lot of players start to feel some fatigue. I think it (his time on the DL) came at a very good time for both of those reasons.”center_img Newsroom GuidelinesNews TipsContact UsReport an Errorlast_img read more
