Nobody was hurt during the blaze which eventually burned out. Betty Jean Jennings Bartik, one of the first women in the IT industry, has passed away at the age of 86. Bartik was on the team that programmed and de-bugged the first general-purpose computer, the ENIAC, or Electronic Numerical Integrator and Computer. She was one of the female mathematicians, known as “computers,” recruited by the United States military during World War II to test ballistics. They soon moved into the electronics program. Jean, leftJennings Bartik was born in December of 1924 and was raised on a farm near Stanberry in Missouri. After high school, she attended Northwest Missouri State Teachers College, now Northwest Missouri State University where she was the only female Math major at the time and which now has a computer museum named in her honor. She graduated in 1945.ENIAC began in July of 1943, in secret, at the University of Pennsylvania’s engineering school under the code name Project PX. Jennings Bartik was brought into the ENIAC project in the fall of 1945. The computer came on line in February of 1946, having cost $6 million in today’s currency. It weighed 27 tons and contained almost 18,000 vacuum tubes. Jennings Bartik later went on to program the BINAC and UNIVAC, Here’s the thing. The reason you can read this on your playing card-sized handheld goes straight back to ENIAC and women like Betty Jean Jennings Bartik. Your grandma invented the computer. Deal with it. Hrmmm. Says here women are not as good as men at mathematics. Well, there’s a head-scratcher for you. CJ McCollum40.7–– Even in the area where the duos are most similar — long-range sniping — they are still markedly different because of the disparate ways the players come by their threes. Lillard and McCollum have almost exact inverse splits between the percentage of their 3-point makes that have been pull-ups vs. catch-and-shoots over the past four years, per Second Spectrum, while Curry and Thompson’s splits have not lined up quite as cleanly. Despite the fact that these guard pairings have carried similar usage rates them over these past four years (30.7 percent and 26.7 percent for Lillard and McCollum; 31.1 percent and 25.4 percent for Curry and Thompson), the above figures show that they have come by that usage in vastly different ways. This is further driven home by the fact that Curry and Thompson have been assisted on their baskets far more often (52 percent and 82 percent) than have Lillard and McCollum (29.6 percent and 38.5 percent).These differences naturally stem from the high-end talent disparity between the two teams. Curry and Thompson have had the benefit of playing alongside Green and Andre Iguodala for the entirety of their run, and they’ve had Kevin Durant as an additional wingman for the past three years. Lillard and McCollum, meanwhile, have spent the majority of their time playing alongside Moe Harkless and Al-Farouq Aminu, as well as one of big men Mason Plumlee, Jusuf Nurkic and Enes Kanter. Those three are all nice players, and they have each proven incredibly valuable for Portland at different times, but none of them brings anywhere close to the brilliance of Durant or Green, none has the versatility of Iguodala, and none is the caliber of playmaker any of the aforementioned Golden State players are.The Warriors thinned out their bench in their series against Houston, but not to the point that Curry and Thompson had less help on their side than Lillard and McCollum do — and anyway, Portland is not Houston. The Blazers don’t have the ability to go small as often or as dangerously as the Rockets did when they put P.J. Tucker at center, which means that Andrew Bogut, Kevon Looney and even Jordan Bell can be on the floor more often. As good as Lillard is, the Blazers don’t have a singular player who has broken the game quite in the same way James Harden. And they don’t have the deep wellspring of wing shooters Houston has, either.What they do have is a star guard tandem and a deep group of players who have supported Dame and CJ on this run to the conference finals. That construction has generally not been enough for teams to beat the Warriors in the past. It may not be now, either. Stephen Curry46.7–– This, of course, is the natural result of the contrasting job descriptions of these players, which flow from the differing roster constructions in Portland and Golden State.Thompson is a classic shooting guard like you might have seen in the early 2000s. He works almost exclusively off the ball, flying off pin-downs and flare screens, spotting up when Curry runs pick and rolls or making split-cuts when Draymond Green has the ball in the post. Curry, meanwhile, may be Golden State’s point guard, but he is more of a co-lead ball-handler, along with Green and Durant, because that structure allows the Warriors to better weaponize his shooting abilities.By contrast, Lillard is essentially the prototype of the modern-day attack guard who is at the controls of the offense at all times, while McCollum splits his time: working off the ball alongside Lillard, on the ball as a de facto backup point guard in certain lineups and off the ball again in bench-heavy units alongside Evan Turner or Curry’s brother Seth. Trail Blazers stars Damian Lillard and CJ McCollum have combined to make 1,645 threes over the past four seasons, more than any duo in the league besides Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson.1The four-year period starts when McCollum was elevated to the starting lineup — after the offseason departures of LaMarcus Aldridge, Wesley Matthews and Nic Batum — and became the Robin to Lillard’s Batman. Steph and Klay are also the only backcourt in the league to average more collective points per game over that span of time than Dame and CJ.The Splash Brothers are still (somewhat obviously) the superior pairing. Curry and Thompson are widely considered two of the greatest shooters of all time, and they completely warp opposing defenses. Thompson is also far and away the best defender of the four players. But when the quartet squares off in the Western Conference finals, which begin Tuesday night, the Blazers won’t just be bringing an inferior version of the Splash Brothers to the table. The Splash Brothers Lite are mostly just different — and there are even a few things Dame and CJ do a bit better than Steph and Klay.For starters, Portland’s guards attack off the bounce far more often than their Northern California counterparts. Lanco Infratech Ltd is looking to raise as much as $1 billion over the next 18 months through a stake sale and a listing of its power assets as it seeks to pare back a heavy debt load, its chief financial officer said.The news comes as the independent power producer swung back to profit in the June-September quarter, sending its shares surging by a fifth in afternoon trade.Lanco has some $5.3 billion in debt and has been losing money in recent years as its plants have been stalled due to delays in regulatory clearances and obtaining coal.”It could be a strategic investor (for a stake sale). We’d also like to list Lanco power (assets),” CFO T. Adi Babu said in a telephone interview, adding that the company was hoping to raise between $750 million and $1 billion from these measures.It also hopes to sell one large power project in 2017 once all its plants are fully operational.”We want to sell one big asset to bring down debt and improve liquidity. There’s a good prospect we can sell at least one asset,” Adi Babu said.Lanco has been working with its bankers to restructure its debts, and Adi Babu said its lenders had started releasing funds to help it restart work at stalled plants.The company now operates 4,000 megawatts (MW) of power assets and expects to complete another 4,000 MW in around two years, which will involve its debt rising to 450 billion rupees before it starts falling.Lanco said the outlook for its power business was improving as coal availability has increased and it has sealed power purchase agreements with consumers.It reported a quarterly net profit of Rs 989 million ($14.9 million) during the June-September quarter on Monday, against a Rs 5.3 billion loss a year earlier.India’s indebted power companies have been struggling in recent years as an economic downturn and delays to projects crimped revenue.Adi Babu added that Lanco still wants to sell its Griffin coal mine in Australia, which it put on the block last year, but the company is unlikely to find a decent bidder until international coal prices recover.
iHeartMedia and Jake Brennan, host and producer of the rock and roll true-crime podcast “Disgraceland,” announced Wednesday at the Winter Podcast Upfront a new partnership to bring listeners two additional seasons of “Disgraceland” to the iHeartPodcast Network.Season 3 will feature 10 episodes and will debut March 14 with part one of a two-part episode on Kurt Cobain and Courtney Love, part two will follow on March 19. Subsequent new episodes will be released bi-weekly on Tuesdays beginning March 26 with an episode on Snoop Dogg. Prior research has shown that despite an apparent love of sugar, bats do not necessarily always choose a plant with the sweetest nectar, which results in plants that produce diluted nectar in areas frequented by bats. Why this occurs has baffled scientists—logic suggests the opposite would occur. To find the answer, the researchers devised a novel experiment they believed would finally solve the puzzle.The experiment consisted of outfitting 23 artificial flowers (in a part of a Costa Rican rainforest) with sensors and pumps that were able to mix sugar into an artificial nectar and then pump it to the flower. All of the flowers were connected to a computer, which counted the number of bat visits and controlled the concentration of the nectar for each flower. The researchers then routinely captured a number of bats and tagged them with tiny radio transmitters. This setup allowed the researchers to monitor and even influence bat feeding in the wild over a period of six years (and multiple generations of bats) and to see the impact it had on plant evolution.As part of their analysis of the data, the researchers assumed that a bat visit to an artificial flower resulted in the transfer of virtual pollen to another virtual flower, resulting in virtual offspring—this approach allowed the researchers to cause the artificial flowers to evolve at a much higher rate than natural flowers. The team also found that they could manipulate the numbers of bats present in the study by manipulating the nectar, and they found that as a bat population grows, each bat is able to consume less nectar, which made them less discerning concerning sugar concentration and more concerned about finding more to eat—that in turn led the plants to produce less sugar and a diluted nectar. The team also found that the Weber effect may have come into play at certain points—where increases in sweetness led to diminished returns for the plants. This document is subject to copyright. This mismatch is an unsolved evolutionary paradox. Here we show that lower quality, or more dilute, nectars evolve when the strength of preferring larger quantities or higher qualities of nectar diminishes as magnitudes of the physical stimuli increase. In a virtual evolution experiment conducted in the tropical rainforest, bats visited computer-automated flowers with simulated genomes that evolved relatively dilute nectars. Simulations replicated this evolution only when value functions, which relate the physical stimuli to subjective sensations, were nonlinear. Selection also depended on the supply/demand ratio; bats selected for more dilute nectar when competition for food was higher. We predict such a pattern to generally occur when decision-makers consider multiple value dimensions simultaneously, and increases of psychological value are not fully proportional to increases in physical magnitude.

In fact, it’s sunny, hot and humid.Miami shattered a record Monday with a high temperature of 86 degrees. University of Miami tropical weather expert Brian McNoldy tells the Miami Herald a confluence of unlucky weather is to blame. Cold fronts that typically cool off the area are fizzling before they arrive. And, to the south, a high pressure ridge keeps pushing along warm air from the tropics.It is the second toasty December for South Florida. Or, as McNoldy says, the area has “gotten gypped out of two nice Decembers in a row.McNoldy says last year’s heat — accompanied by record rainfall — was part of an intense El Nino. But this year’s heat is much more localized.
