first_imgCategories: Letters to the Editor, Opinion I find it interesting people writing to disagree with students participating in the democratic process during school hours. It appears you believe that learning only takes place at a desk in a classroom. Learning is a lifelong process that takes place in many modalities. Maybe you need to think of the walkouts and demonstrations as field trips. The students will learn as much if not more from the imprinting that takes place during the process. Discovery and experience are powerful teachers. It gives them hope and a vision. And you would have them robbed of that precious teaching tool? You talk about disruption to the educational process. There are always students and classes coming and going for various reasons. It’s part of the daily routine, the ebb and flow of the day. Exiting the building to stand in solidarity with others was no more disruptive than students passing to the cafeteria for lunch. What are you afraid of?Exercising their First Amendment rights to disagree with the latitude of the Second Amendment doesn’t destroy the learning of the day. It sets an example for others to ponder their core values. It engages and empowers the students participating. It’s a life lesson in the context of the classroom, they won’t soon forget. Hopefully, it will help guide their paths of the future. These students have said their purpose isn’t political. It’s for their safety in the future. They aren’t pawns of the liberals. They have joined this movement with purpose and resolve.SUZANNE SCHUFFERTScotiaMore from The Daily Gazette:EDITORIAL: Find a way to get family members into nursing homesEDITORIAL: Urgent: Today is the last day to complete the censusEDITORIAL: Beware of voter intimidationFoss: Should main downtown branch of the Schenectady County Public Library reopen?Schenectady teens accused of Scotia auto theft, chase; Ended in Clifton Park crash, Saratoga Sheriff…last_img
