McLaren’s Fernando Alonso is set to start Sunday’s Formula One Malaysian Grand Prix from the back of the grid as he tries out an upgraded Honda power unit in practice on Friday.Rules permit a driver to use no more than five complete power units and their constituent components over the course of a season.Running the upgraded power unit will result in Alonso taking on new variants of five of the six components that comprise it, which will cost the Spaniard 30 places on the 22-car Sepang grid. The double world champion took a similarly hefty engine-related penalty in last month’s Belgian Grand Prix at the Spa-Francorchamps circuit, where he also exceeded his permitted allocation of power unit parts.”We knew these penalties would come,” said Alonso, who lost some of his allocation of power units to reliability issues earlier in the season.”One of the best places was Spa because of the conditions of our engines at that point. The second best was maybe Malaysia because the weather could play a big factor in the race…”Honda, engine suppliers to the Woking-based McLaren squad, have made steady progress after a difficult renewal of their once-dominant partnership last season. The upgrade they have brought to Malaysia this weekend is the latest in a spate of enhancements they have been making to the engine over the course of the year. The latest change features a lighter engine block and a redesigned exhaust aimed at boosting the power units efficiency, a Honda spokesperson said.advertisementAlonso will run it during Friday’s opening practice session, with Honda deciding whether to leave it in the car for the second 90-minute session in the afternoon. They will revert to their old-specification power unit for Saturday’s qualifying and the race.Alonso finished seventh in Belgium, despite having started dead last, and is targeting another points finish on Sunday.”That’s the target for both cars,” he said. “Even if I start last then hopefully we can recover places quite soon.”The 35-year-old, who took his first pole position in Malaysia and has won the race three times, is 11th in the drivers standings.Team mate Jenson Button, celebrating his 300th grand prix start this weekend is 19 points adrift in 15th.
EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. — Watching rookie wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. running past and around opponents is fueling Victor Cruz’s comeback from knee surgery.Cruz said that his rehabilitation from patella tendon surgery more than two months ago is progressing and that he hopes to start running soon. The dynamic Giants wideout known for his salsa-dancing after touchdowns can bend his right knee, has full range of motion and is doing calf raises, leg raises, knee extensions and all the fun stuff that comes along with rehab. The real fun has been watching Beckham and thinking about them being a dynamic one-two combination for quarterback Eli Manning in 2015.“He’s been great,” Beckham said. “That kid is a heck of an athlete, heck of a ball player. Just seeing the things that he’s doing out there is motivating me to come back and be able to play next to him and do some really good things next year.”Beckham has become the catalyst of the offense since Cruz was injured on Oct. 12 against Philadelphia. After missing the first four games of the season with a hamstring injury, the 12th pick overall in the draft has 79 catches for 1,120 yards and 11 touchdown catches — all team rookie records. This is the second straight season that Cruz did not finish the season because of a knee injury. He played in 14 games last season and only six this year, finishing with 23 catches for 337 yards and one touchdown.Even tougher was watching the Giants (6-9) struggle through a seven-game losing streak that started in the game in which he was hurt.“It’s been tough being out, obviously, during that span of those games that we lost because you feel helpless, like you want to do something but you can’t,” Cruz said. “But watching Odell has been fun.”Cruz, a former free agent who like Beckham developed a huge fan following with his play, has told the rookie to stay grounded, keep the same inner circle that he has always had and turn away the new people trying to horn in.“He’s a good kid and he’s really learning on the fly, which is good,” Cruz said. Cruz does not have a timetable for getting back on the field. When the trainers tell him to play, he’ll play. Patience is his new friend. The 28-year-old has spoken to many people about coming back from his injury.Hall of Famer Michael Strahan told him to enjoy his time away from the game. Teammates Marcus Harris and Zack Bowman said they returned from patella surgery stronger and faster than before it.Cruz knows there are people who have concerns about players who are injured two seasons in a row and he was ready when a reporter asked about whether he had concerns about returning at 100 percent, calling him ‘a doubter.’“There’s no doubt in my mind that I’ll return to form and I’ll return to the type of player that I was in years past and I’m excited to put myself through this,” Cruz said. “I’ve overcome a lot of obstacles and I feel like this is just another one that’s come across that I have to conquer it and move forward.”Cruz said the injury has taught him that nothing is guaranteed in football. “I know for sure that this game is what I love and what I want to do and I’ll never take it for granted again,” he said.(TOM CANAVAN, AP Sports Writer)TweetPinShare0 Shares

The look and feel of a device dictates a product’s price and has long-standing effects on customer satisfaction. For IoT device engineers, this means one thing: you have to sweat the details. Every component choice matters, particularly given most IoT products’ small size.Switches and buttons are the unsung “heroes” responsible for driving the smart home tech movement. There are six important reasons why they shouldn’t be an afterthought in a smart home product engineer’s designs.Hardware Hardware ranging from the switches, sensors and screens used on smart televisions, connected door locks, smart thermostat controls, etc. – play a critical role in the proliferation of a smart home’s connected devices. Humans are tactile creatures so the way a product feels is a critical part of a user’s overall satisfaction.“On/off” switches are generally the only product control feature a user physically touches; in fact, many times the switch is a customer’s first interaction with a product. It is critical that switches create a delightful experience or else consumers will search out another product that better meets their needs. Security Internet Protocol (IP) cameras are a common feature in many smart homes, and it’s no wonder why: According to an iControl Networks study, a burglary takes place every 14.1 seconds in the United States. IP cameras allow a person to monitor what’s going on at home from their laptop, smartphone, or any other smart device from anywhere in the world. IP cameras also act as a deterrent to crime, help police apprehend criminals and simply provide piece of mind to a homeowner.KMR Mini Tactile Switch (Source: C&K) But these valiant efforts in protection will go to waste without the right switch powering the smart cameras. For these types of applications, a miniature tactile switch’s small size is perfect for meeting the needs of shrinking form factors – such as smaller lens displays – but are also robust enough to prevent an intruder from breaking the camera, rendering it useless.Access Control IP cameras only capture images of people who are not supposed to enter your home. Access control provides an additional level of security for the 90 percent of consumers concerned with personal and family security when it comes to smart home adoption, again according to iControl Networks.Internet doorbells with built-in cameras can show you who is at the front door, while smart door locks allow you to unlock the door remotely. These devices can come in handy to unlock your house for the babysitter or forgetful teenagers who left their keys at school. Most smart locks utilize some type of miniature tactile switch to set or reset the lock. These switches need to be small, have long life and be able to deal with harsh conditions like rain and humidity. Switches used on Internet doorbells also require high cycle life and the ability to accommodate over-travel and over-force conditions (e.g., kids, delivery persons and neighbors who pound on the doorbell repeatedly). Smart Thermostats Almost half (41.5 percent) of residential energy consumption in the United States is due to heating and cooling, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration. This is why many consumers are installing smart thermostat systems into their homes that automatically regulate heat and air conditioning systems that help cut energy costs.KSC Electro-Mechanical Switch(Source: C&K) Many smart thermostats use touch screens for the operator interface; however, many companies use standard switches as a low-cost solution. The best type of switches to use are small, electro-mechanical and navigation switches that provide a customized sound and feel that denotes quality. These switches can also be used for reset functions to protect against power surges that can make a product inoperable. Heating and Cooling Smart thermostats can help consumers save on heating and cooling costs, but they do little to warn when a larger building’s HVAC system will break down.Sensors align the different components of a smart HVAC system to alert building owners to any abnormal activity or when it’s time for a repair. But, these sensors would be useless if the proper switches weren’t in place to power the system in the first place. Because HVAC equipment and controllers are commonly located in utility rooms, basements, and other dirty environments, these products’ switches must be able to accommodate harsh conditions. Corrosion resistance is a key factor to maintain reliable electrical signals in the presence of dust or moisture. With thermostats and commercial room controllers, cycle life is also an important consideration as these products are generally built to last up to ten years.Modern Smart Lighting Lighting represents 19 percent of global electricity consumption and 23 percent of electricity consumption in the United States. According to the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC), one of the simplest ways to reduce a building’s carbon footprint is to retrofit lighting.SDA DIP Switch (Source: C&K) For improved smart lighting efficiency, one of the most common products is the occupancy, or motion sensor. These products can be mounted in a corner of the room or be part of a wall light switch. The device typically incorporates a passive infrared (PIR) sensor to determine movement, but many of these sensors require the use of a DIP switch to adjust sensitivity and timing settings, or else the system won’t function properly. The DIP switches are generally required to have low-profile miniature footprints and have a contact system that can resist corrosion and provide reliable switching at low current levels.A typical U.S. home could contain more than 500 smart devices by 2022 according to research firm Gartner. However, hardware still plays an important role in these products. The simple tact, pushbutton, and DIP switches – generally the last components to be added to the design and one of the lowest cost items on the bill of materials – are typically the only part of the end product the consumer actually touches. When they work, they go unnoticed. But when they don’t, the results can be expensive and frustrating.Mike Bolduc is Global Marketing Manager at C&K, where he is responsible for leading market strategy and global growth efforts for the industrial and medical business segments. Monaco 1 Paris Saint-Germain 2: Cavani & Neymar bail out wayward Mbappe Omnisport Last updated 1 year ago 05:59 11/27/17 AFP A wayward Kylian Mbappe helped keep Monaco in the match against Paris Saint-Germain, but the visitors’ class eventually told on Sunday. Paris Saint-Germain pulled further clear in the Ligue 1 title race with an ominous 2-1 win over Monaco, despite Kylian Mbappe’s difficulties on his return to Stade Louis II.Edinson Cavani and Neymar scored either side of half-time as Unai Emery’s men rocketed nine points clear at the top.Mbappe – whistled throughout by the home fans – was in a forgiving mood, the teenager incredibly wasting four clear-cut chances before he inadvertently deflected in a late consolation for the hosts. A Liverpool legend in the making: Behind Virgil van Dijk’s remarkable rise to world’s best player Cavani was less generous in the first half as he spared his team-mate’s blushes by stabbing in the opener inside 20 minutes.Mbappe’s ongoing profligacy plagued PSG after the restart but it ultimately proved inconsequential to the result, which Neymar sealed by winning and scoring a penalty.Monaco, who for much of the match looked incapable of mounting a fightback, did gain hope when Joao Moutinho’s free-kick deflected off Mbappe to cut the deficit, but it was not enough to prevent the champions from falling further off the pace.FULL TIME: PSG edge Monaco for a 2-1 win and three points on the road !! #ASMPSG #ALLEZPARIS pic.twitter.com/X3hntlMDGf— PSG English (@PSG_English) November 26, 2017Mbappe was sprightly on his return to the principality, but his first chance came and went early on as he raced onto Neymar’s pass and touched the ball past the onrushing Danijel Subasic, only to inexplicably finish wide of a vacant net from a manageable angle.A second clear-cut chance for an early opener escaped PSG in similarly agonising fashion. Cavani cleverly helped Mbappe’s byline cut-back to the far post, where a stretching Julian Draxler could only steer it the wrong side of the upright. But the visitors only had to wait until the 19th minute to make their dominance count.Adrien Rabiot fed a simple pass into Draxler’s feet and the German did likewise for an unmarked Cavani, who poked high into the roof of the net at close range.Monaco had Subasic preventing greater damage at the end of a one-sided first half after the goalkeeper reacted sharply to Draxler’s low drive.PSG started the second half in much the same manner as they began the first, Neymar first cracking the right-hand post before Mbappe tried to be too cute in a one-on-one.But any frustration evaporated even quicker this time around as the Brazilian dispatched a 52nd-minute spot-kick into the bottom-left corner, having been bundled over in the area by Almamy Toure. However, even the two-goal buffer could not ease Mbappe’s nerves around goal. The France star blazed another fine chance over the bar and could have had four when he poked wide with a final one-on-one.And the jitters seemed to spread, Cavani nodding wide of a gaping target shortly after Jemerson had turned a low cross against his own post.Mbappe became even more central to Emery’s irritation when Moutinho’s free-kick flicked off his head and wrong-footed Alphonse Areola in the 81st minute, but PSG were never truly threatened again in stretching their lead at the top. KEY OPTA STATS- Kylian Mbappe missed four big chances, the most in a Ligue 1 game this season.- PSG have only lost once in their last 34 Ligue 1 games (W28, D5), v Nice on 30 April 2017 (1-3).- Monaco have scored in their last nine league games, only Marseille are currently on a better streak in the French top-flight (18).- PSG have scored 45 goals after 14 games in Ligue 1 this season, their highest tally ever at this stage and the highest in Ligue 1 since St Etienne in 1969/70 (46).- Emery’s side have netted 71 goals in all competitions this season. In 2016/17, they achieved this on 24 January 2017 versus Bordeaux.- Paris have hit the woodwork 12 times in Ligue 1 this season, more than any other team. read more

VICTORIA – A pod of orcas has made a brief visit to Victoria Harbour, the second excursion by a group of killer whales in as many weeks.Jackie Cowan, who lives on a boat in the harbour and is also a captain on a whale-watching vessel, says the pod cruised in on Sunday evening. She identified them as transient orcas, which prey mainly on seals, sealions and dolphins.Cowan says the group of at least four orcas arrived in the harbour as they tracked the tide line and the marine creatures it carried with it following a very low ebb tide earlier in the day.The pod left the harbour about 30 minutes later. On June 4, another pod of transient orcas spent about an hour in the harbour, marking the first appearance of the mammals in the waterway in decades.Cowan says Sunday’s visit was likely related to the recent low tides.“Animals and organisms that aren’t normally affected by tide were swept out with exceptionally low tides of recent days and were coming back in with (the rising) tide,” Cowan said. She said smaller marine mammals that are the whale’s usual prey would likely have been following the large amount of nutrients carried along by the tide, which is why the killer whales were not far behind.

Rabat – Following his dismissal as appointed Head of Government last week, Abdelilah Benkirane told reporters on Thursday that he is “still the caretaker of the government and Secretary General of the Justice and Development Party (PJD).”After the end of the General Secretariat of the Justice and Development Party (PJD), Benkirane said, “I was the designated Head of Government. I did not manage to form a coalition government. King Mohammed VI [then] appointed a new Head of Government.”“The period [in which I was an appointed Head of Government] is over with its positives and negatives,” Benkirane continued. “It is the period which is over, not me – I am still alive.” Benkirane had spent five months attempting to conduct a fruitful negotiation with party leaders. He added that his successor as Head of Government, Saad Eddine Othmani, is the current speaker. Othmani, who said that King Mohammed VI’s decision for him to replace Abedlilah Benkirane took him by surprise, wasted no time, starting negotiations with party leaders on Tuesday. To date, Othmani has met with Aziz Akhannouch, the Secretary General of the National Rally of Independents Party (RNI), a delegation from the Istiqlal Party (PI), Idriss Lachgar, Secretary General of the Socialist Union of Popular Forces (USFP), and Mohamed Nabil Benabdallah, Secretary General of the Progress and Socialism Party (PPS).Following Secretary General, Ilyass ELomari’s meeting with Othmani, the PAM issued a communiqué on Wednesday, repeating their previously expressed position that they will not participate in the coalition government. However, in his first interview with foreign media, Othmani said that he is well supported and expects to form the coalition government soon.
